Austin

Drake Muyinza

Book: Notebook, doubt there will be a lot of reading, and I'll have a lot of thoughts and will want to jot them down

@drakemuyinza

Kristina Gonzalez Sander

I'd bring Harry Potter because I'll need some escapism on this island, Channel Orange by Frank Ocean

@kristinaperdida

Lexie Waldrum

Favorite place in my city: Townlake is my go-to spot. It's expected as a runner to love Townlake - but it's too good. A 10 mile loop (6 bridges you can cross North to South and vice versa) in the heart of Austin's downtown, it's the perfect immersion of nature. I feel like it's similar to my personality, a crossroads of crunchy granola gal and super sharp tech. But when I am on the trail it's easy to let my mind wander and body feel the ground beneath me without having to travel far away!

@lexierunnergirl

Miranda Bennett

Book: Letters to a Young Poet, Rainer Maria Rilke–it feels like an old friend
Record: Vespertine, Björk–my favorite pocket of her music! One part nostalgia, and another part genuine love for all of the elements that are layered into each song.
Food: Cheese!–there's no need to explain, is there?

@mirandabennett

Raasin Mcintosh

Book: Outlander by: Diana Galbaldon because of the history, time travel, and adventure.. plus all 640 pages to keep me occupied while stranded.

Record: Miles Davis ""in a silent way"" because it's calming and music flows with the island elements.

Food: Canned beans bc they're a great source of protein, iron, fiber, and potassium.

@loveraasin

Atlanta

Huyen Nguyen

Book: something that tells me about all the plants that are safe to eat on that island! Record: Channel Orange by Frank Ocean or Ctrl by Sza - just throw either in my backpack!
Food: a fruit that I can plant the seeds of and grow on the island! I’m trying to survive!

@sayhuyen

Bay Area

Augustine Wiah

Favorite place in the city: I'd say Dolores Park. It represents culture and community. There you find people of every background living their truth- from exercising, skating, picnics, dancing etc, you get what San Francisco is made of after a day spent at Dolores Park.

@_stin0

Cora Wo

 Favorite place in my city: I love the hills, trails and trees that are the backdrop to Oakland. Often times, many people give Oakland an unfair reputation, but it is full of wonderful people, places, and things to do. When I find myself needing "me" time, I often hike in the trails surrounded by lush greenery.

@xcorestudio

Elaine Pavich

One book: I think I would try to write a book rather than read one because I love writing. I would dabble in writing a biography about my Dad.

@xcorestudio

Jennifer Pattee

Favorite place in my city: The redwood grove in Golden Gate Park

Why: The trees are 150-year old. Skeptics said they would never grow on top of sand dunes. The park designers proved them wrong. I run through them every day. They bring me joy, serenity, and perspective. I want to build something great that lasts 100 years, too. “Keep going,” these trees whisper as I run. “Skeptics will say it’s impossible. Prove them wrong.

@jenniferpattee

Kristy Drutman

Book: "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie

@browngirl_green

Megan Barrett

If I'm going to a remote island, I'm bringing Ned DeLoach's Reef Fish In-A-Pocket book for whatever ocean this island resides in, a Willy Tea Taylor live album, and ponzu! The fish ID book would keep me busy trying to find all the local inhabitants, Willy Tea is music that I can play on repeat 100 million times and ponzu makes everything delicious, especially fresh fish!

@meganshootsfilm

Sana Javeri Kadri

My mission is to use food as a tool for equity. My job as CEO of Diaspora Co. lies at the intersection of culture, sustainable farming, storytelling and global supply chains. We're building a better spice trade, decolonizing your pantry, and cooking up a storm whilst we're at it.

@sanajaverikadri

Chicago

Cicely Green

Favorite place in my city: Without hesitation, the Lakefront Trail. We have over 20 miles of paved trail alongside Lake Michigan. We are so fortunate to have a tranquil space to bike, run, go to the beach, or enjoy life.

@run.2.bq

Dan Tun

Book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by JK Rowling (note: I have never read a single Harry Potter book or seen a full movie. I figure I may as well start on the island and see what the hype is all about.)

@dantun

Washington D.C.

Carl Maynard

Carl hosts Walk With Locals, a community project that encourages people to explore and support their communities through a shared love of photography.

@carlnard

Mona Garcia

Mona is an instructor at Rumble, and also a Lulu ambassador. She’s currently hosting workout sessions during COVID. Previously, she was organizing group runs from The Line DC. Currently, she is focused on organizing running retreats.

@monalavinia

Morgan West

You cannot beat a walk through the Mount Pleasant neighborhood - the houses are gorgeous and it's hugged on three sides by Rock Creek Park, making it one of the greenest places in an already very green city. Pure zen.

@aCreativeDC

Los Angeles

Aditi Mayer

My one book would be Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer–an amazing indigenous educator that will shift your understanding and relationship of nature.

@aditimayer

Brandon "Beastboi" Juezan

One record - Chillhop Essentials Compilation. This might be cheating, but my ideal single record would a compilation of as many lo-fi hip hop beats as possible. Chillhop Music makes essential albums for every season. This genre is like the background music to my life. I literally listen to lo-fi everyday for a solid hour or two nonstop. It helps me get through a wide range of thoughts & emotions, both positive & negative.

@beastboithehypegod

Dave Coast

Book: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Record: Hot Fuss by The Killers
Food: Cereal

@davecoast

Lisa Hsieh

Favorite place in my city: El Dorado Nature Center in Long Beach, California. We live in a small city but are very lucky to have a nature preserve nearby where we have access to trails and wildlife. I grew up near the mountains and forests in Taiwan. The Nature Center allows me to share the experience of growing up close to nature with my children.

@lisahsieh

Oliver English

Book: How To Do Nothing - Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell–A fascinating and timely look at how, why, and where we direct our attention. Its a wake-up call for those of us who felt in some way disconnected in our increasingly fast passed world. It's a beautiful reminder to put down your device and go for a walk in the neighborhood–perhaps the first step too fully starting to rebuild our relationship with the natural world - and all of those that inhabit it!

@oliverenglish

Olympia Auset

Record: Innervisions by Stevie Wonder because it sounds really amazing
Remote Island–I'd say coconuts, but I have my fingers crossed the island would already have tropical fruit. Therefore, I'd bring salt because it might be the hardest thing to find.

@supr.mrkt

Ross Kimball

Book: Complete writings of
John Muir -I am in the middle of reading and it would really bug me if I didn't finish it. Food: Lasagna can last a lot longer than you think...

@merosskimball

Stacie Vanags

Book: "Swell," by Liz Clark. She would inspire me to search the island for undiscovered surf and swell, and for me to embrace the uncomfortable, and probably make a coconut bra and grass skirt!

Record: Dolly Parton = legend. Classic. Timeless. Duh ha!
Food item: Assuming there are already abundant avocados on the island, my food item would be cashews.

@salted_spirit

London

Amber Joy Greenidge-Sabral

I’m a vegetarian now but I’d probably turn to fish on a deserted island. I’d pick a good crispy loaf of rosemary and olive oil sourdough to bring with me because I bread never gets boring. I have a knack for foraging so finding herbs and fruits on an island would be really enjoyable.

@findyourjoy

Arianna Radji

Book: An encyclopedia so that I can learn a new fact each day
Record: Bohemian rhapsody by Queen. Doesn't need an explanation does it?!
Food: Rice. A Persian staple that goes perfect with the fresh white fish I'd catch daily

@ariannaradjilee

Chrissa Amuah

Book, ‘Heads of the Colored People,’ by Nafissa Thompson-Spires’. This is a very cleverly written book. It has so many layers, depth and characters packed into twelve short stories. Some are hysterically funny while others make you think. I’d have something to read each day for almost two weeks, before refreshing my memory and starting again.

@amwa_designs

Douglas McMaster

Douglas is a chef, restaurateur, Masterchef finalist, and pioneer of the zero-food waste movement. He has worked in world-renowned restaurants such as Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, and Noma in Copenhagen. He opened Silo in 2014, his zero-waste restaurant, with a mission to demonstrate respect to the environment.

@mcmasterchef

Ellya Sam

TBDOne book- “how to survive a remote island” it was so hard to pick just one book but if I had to be on a remote island it would have to be a 101 book to keep me alive on a remote island- I don’t think I’d do quite well.

@ellyasam

Emma Sibley

One book would be The Secret History by Donna Tart, no matter how many times I read it, its amazing.
One record would be Come Together by Primal Scream, the best memories of dancing with pals.
One food item would be a Croissant, Sweet and savoury - perfect!

@londonterrariums

James Whittle (The Tempest Two)

Book - The Old man and the sea - Incredible timeless book that I enjoy reading again and again
Record - Nina Simone - Sinnerman - A story in itself that gets better the more you listen to it. Also reminds me of some epic memories in the mountains.
Food - cookie - who doesn’t want cookies all the time?!

@thetempesttwo

Jemma Finch

My favourite place in London is probably a plant filled rooftop space in East London, I love to go there in the summer to relax with the views and inspiration of the fast city of London but being surrounded by peace and greenery.

@jemmafinch_

Jono Selvadurai

One food item: I'm guessing there will be decent fruits and vegetables on the island so I think I'm going to go with like an unlimited supply of Tim Tams - double coat. I'm a big sweet tooth and it reminds of home, it's like luxury when I can get my hands on a pack.

@joknow

Keeley Haworth

Favorite place in my city: Our favourite place in London is Victoria Park in May when the blossom trees are in full bloom. Its one of the best places East for a spring walk and lunch at a local pub - perfect way to relax of an afternoon.

@plates_london

Kirk Haworth

Food item - Our own (Plates) cashew blue plant-cheese and some bread crackers... as we're savoury over sweet in the treats department if we had to choose, and have always been big cheese lovers...

@plates_london

Natasha Minter

My fave place in my city is probably the park near my house because I really found so much peace in my local area during lockdown.

@natashaminter

Tom Caulfield (The Tempest Two)

Favourite place in London is Richmond, because it feels like a small town on the river, but close to the hustle and bustle of the city.

@thetempesttwo

NYC

SAMuel KROST

My favorite place in New York City is my apartment. Over the years, my apartment has become a home not only for myself but for all of my incredible friends. It's the place we have most fun and where we've created some of our most memorable memories together.

@samuelkrost

NICK CUTSUMPAS

Favorite place in my new city of LA will have to be Venice Beach. Need to do more exploring, but that is the leader right now =]

@farmernicknyc

JENNY GAITHER

One book: I bring the book The Alchemist because it's a reminder to never give up on your goals and that the Universe has your back.

@jennygaither

Iman Smith

One book: The Quran. I could read it forever. And one record: Victory Lap: Nipsey Hussle. It’s motivation in audio form.

@imansmith

TANASIA SWIFT

Book: Going to Meet the Man by James Baldwin. I'm a lover of short stories. James Baldwins stories are usually centered around the black experience and commonly based in NYC. If I'm on a remote island, I may want stories that remind me of my hometown.

@billionoyster

VIC BARRETT

Vic is a climate youth activist who focuses on environmental justice. After experiencing Hurricane Sandy in 2012, he recognized the disparities in relief efforts. Since then, he has traveled to Paris to attend and speak at the COP21 UN Conference on Climate Change, is part of the Alliance for Climate Education, and has spoken at the UN in NYC on Sustainable Development Goals.

@vicbarrett_

Philadelphia

JOHNIE GAIL

One book: The Hidden Life of Trees — this book about the life, death and regeneration of forests made me realize how little we understand about the natural world, and I find something new to make my jaw drop every time I read it.

@dirtbagdarling

DAVE SILVER

One Book: Think & Grow Rich -- I've read this book 3 times, and it was what gave me the inspiration to start my business & succeed. I could read this again & again.

@davesilver_

SUDAN GREENE

Sudan is an artist, activist, wellness enthusiast, and co-founder of Spirits Up, a mindfulness and outdoor activation program “working to heal the black community through yoga and meditation, by any means necessary.”

@imoutfront

San Diego

MAKENZIE LOWE

Book: Either a book on exotic fish in the area for snorkeling purposes, or City of Thieves by David Benioff
Record: Something fun like Bee Gee's Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack

@_makenziegrace

ORIANA POINDEXTER

Favorite place in my city: The bike lanes are my favorite place in the city because it's leads to all things amazing.

Record: Neil Young's On the Beach, for obvious reasons.
